A dishwasher that won’t drain properly can turn your kitchen into a waterlogged mess. But before you panic and start washing dishes by hand, let’s go through some common culprits and simple troubleshooting steps to get your appliance back in action.

Check for a Clogged Drain

If water is pooling at the bottom of your dishwasher, the drain may be clogged with food particles, grease, or soap scum. Remove the filter and give it a good rinse, then check the drain for any visible obstructions.

Inspect the Drain Hose

A kinked or blocked drain hose can prevent water from exiting the dishwasher properly. Locate the hose (usually under the sink) and make sure it’s not bent, twisted, or clogged. Running some hot water through it can help clear minor blockages.

Examine the Garbage Disposal Connection

If your dishwasher drains through a garbage disposal, a blockage in the disposal could be the culprit. Run the disposal to clear any debris and check if the dishwasher drains afterward. If you recently installed a new disposal, ensure the knockout plug was removed.

Look at the Drain Pump

The drain pump helps push water out of the dishwasher. If it’s malfunctioning or clogged with debris, water won’t drain properly. Listen for unusual noises or test it for obstructions.

Check the Air Gap (If You Have One)

Some dishwashers have an air gap near the sink faucet to prevent backflow. If this gets clogged, water can back up into the dishwasher. Unscrew the cap and clean out any debris.
